MESS-E LEARNING MATS

Social Studies

MESS-E Social Studies Mats are designed to reinforce basic Social Studies knowledge and facts that students may have forgotten or never even acquired.  MESS-E Social Studies mats are a quick reference anytime your students might need it.  Due to the decreased focus on social studies in the elementary level, many students arrive at middle school lacking basic knowledge in this area. As a veteran Social Studies teacher, I have seen the effects of this first hand.  Here are common problems I have encountered in my social studies classroom in the past:

  • Students were unable to recall the names of most of the presidents.
  • Students were unable name the seven continents.
  • Students would often report that Martin Luther King, Jr. was a president.

Additionally, based on the 2010 National Assessment of Educational                                                                                 Progress Report(NAEP), I found the following statistics to be alarming:

  • Only 23% of 4th graders were able to identify George                                                                                                                            Washington as the first president.
  • More than a quarter of 4th grade students believe                                                                                           Columbus  set sail in 1750.
  • Fewer than 20% of American 4th and 8th graders                                                                                              had more than a basic knowledge of WWII.

Based on what I have just shared, I believe teachers, parents, and students will find MESSE MATS to be a valuable resource in the classroom and at home!
